Alfred Henry O’Keeffe

Art on This Day

Alfred Henry O’Keeffe died on 27 July 1941. He was a well-known New Zealand artist and art teacher who spent most of his life in Dunedin, South Island New Zealand.

He was one of the few New Zealand artists who at the beginning of the 20th century did not travel abroad to collect new ideas. His two sons were both killed in Gallipoli in 1915 during World War 1. This experience can be seen coming through in his paintings.

His art is displayed at many galleries in New Zealand such as, the Auckland Art Gallery, Dunedin Public Art Gallery and Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
