A Real Birmingham Family was a major public art project from Turner Prize-winning artist Gillian Wearing, led by Ikon Gallery, Birmingham. Over four years in the making, the completed sculpture was unveiled on Thursday 30 October 2014, permanently outside the Library of Birmingham. A life size, bronze, depiction of the Jones family - consisting of two sisters, Roma and Emma, both single parents, and their two sons Kyan and Shaye – A Real Birmingham Family has been a focal point for widespread public engagement and national debate.

“A Real Birmingham Family was a highlight of our 50th anniversary programme, at once engaging hundreds of local participants and attracting international attention. Pelham was as sensitive to the needs of those involved - in particular, the winning Jones family - as it was ambitious for Ikon. The right balance was struck, absolutely, and we look back proudly on an event that really was redefining.”
Jonathan Watkins, Director of Ikon Gallery
